Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that is effective against infectious diseases caused
by erythromycin-sensitive bacteria and Mycoplasma in poultry. It achieves its effect by
reversibly binding to the 50S subunit of ribosomes. This binding blocks transpeptidation or
translocation reactions, ultimately leading to impaired and/or inhibited protein synthesis,
and consequently, inhibited cell growth.
