Amoxicillin is a partially synthetic penicillin that exhibits a lethal effect against a wide range of both Grampositive
and Gram-negative bacteria. This includes Campylobacter, Clostridium, Corynebacterium, E. coli,
Erysipelothrix, Haemophilus, Pasteurella, Salmonella, as well as penicillinase-negative strains of Staphylococcus
and Streptococcus. Its bactericidal action arises from the inhibition of cell wall synthesis. Clavulanic acid functions
as an inhibitor of beta-lactamase enzymes. This compound contains a beta-lactam ring which binds to the active
site of beta-lactamase, rendering the enzyme inactive. Consequently, this enhances the antibacterial efficacy of
beta-lactam antibiotics.
